Occupational Health Services

Drug and Alcohol Testing
To help ensure your workplace is free from the ill effects of substance abuse, UPMC Western Maryland Occupational Health offers testing on-site or in-house for these purposes:
- Reasonable Suspicion
- Return to Work
- DOT Requirements
Medical Review Officer (MRO) services can be provided in-house to ensure appropriate, discrete management of drug and alcohol testing results.
Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) services are available in-house to treat, educate and monitor employees who have tested positive for drugs and/or alcohol.
Drug-Free Workplace programs can be developed and administered for any business desiring a pro-active abuse policy for their company.
Keeping our employees free of communicable illness is important to workplace productivity and helps to lower lost-time illness and health insurance costs. Immunizations for some infectious diseases, such as Hepatitis B, are mandated under OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen regulations. Vaccines against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, a combination of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, and influenza are available through our Occupational Health Services. PPD skin testing is also available and on-site flu shots can also be scheduled.
Independent Medical Examiner (IME)
The purpose of an independent medical exam is for a doctor not associated with your care to provide an impartial and objective exam. This is especially important in workers’ compensation cases. Our Occupational Health Services medical examiner confirms the cause and nature of your illness or injury and then prepares a written report on the findings. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 240-964-9355. The exam takes approximately two hours. If the exam has been requested by an insurance company or attorney, contact them to see if there will be any expense. Otherwise, please call 240-964-9355 to inquire about the cost.
Mask Fit/Pulmonary Function Testing
OSHA recommends that mask fit testing to be performed annually for employees covered under the respiratory protection program. Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is at the examining physician’s discretion, but is an integral part of the program. As part of this program, UPMC Western Maryland Occupational Health also offers physician review of the OSHA respiratory questionnaire and the accompanying physical examination. UPMC Western Maryland can provide all of the above services in-house as well as on-site to meet the needs of your business.
Physical examinations are mandated under DOT and many OSHA (respiratory, asbestos, HAZWOPER) programs. Many other businesses utilizae post-offer (pre-employement) exams as means of screening to ensure that prospective workers are place in appropriate and safe positions within the work place.
At UPMC Western Maryland Occupational health we offer the above exams, plus physicals to determine fitness for duty, return to duty, or for special needs that may be particular to your business.
We also provide firefighter exams under applicable NFPA standards for those who currently require them.
Physical exams can be scheduled in-house or on-site depending upon volumes and the needs of your business.
We provide administrative services for the drug and alcohol screening programs, including writing a drug-free workplace policy, providing on-site education, preparing the necessary forms, choosing random names for drug testing, and much more. Also provided is free drug testing when a business enrolls in the third-party administration program.
We offer health services that help prevent disease when you travel abroad as well as treatment for internationally contracted illnesses when you return stateside.
