Behavioral Health

Western Maryland Health System provides an expanding continuum of Behavioral Health Services to the tri-state region. Services are available for normal life transitions and stress reactions through conditions that require acute inpatient care. Both psychiatric and addiction disorder services are available on an emergency basis 24 hours a day in an Emergency Room setting, or in a traditional inpatient or outpatient environment.

Behavioral Health Services

  • Our Crisis Hotline addresses urgent or emergency needs: 240-964-1399
  • Counselors are available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year to provide face-to-face or crisis line intervention
  • Behavioral Health discharge planning, including referrals to outpatient community resources
  • Traditional non-emergency behavioral health services

Emergency Behavioral Health Services

Emergency Behavioral Health Services provide a professional counselor who is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year in the WMHS Emergency Department. Our counselors are specialized in the provision of crisis assessment and intervention for individuals who present emotional, psychiatric or addiction-related issues.

You and your loved one may be interviewed to determine the presenting problems, obtain a brief history of the problem, and evaluate the degree of stress and decompensation. All of our patients are medically examined by an Emergency Department provider before seeing the counselor. After the counselor completes the evaluation and determines a disposition, you will be referred to the least restrictive level of care. A psychiatrist is available on-call for consultation if needed. This service is the official Prescreening Site for Crisis Assessment and Evaluation for Allegany County, Maryland.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a multidisciplinary program. We provide assessment, individual, and group therapy services to individuals in acute crisis situations (who do not require inpatient treatment but require rapid access to care). The program is primarily a group therapy program, with adjunctive individual therapy and psychiatry services as needed.

The IOP treatment is facilitated by Masters Level, licensed mental health professionals. The program provides high-quality treatment in a group format that has three elements: educational, insight-oriented therapy, and experiential. The focus is on building life skills that can enhance communication, improve cognitive functioning, facilitate improved coping strategies and promote stabilization.
