Joint Replacement Surgery at WMHS Among the Best

Share:

The Total Joint Program at UPMC Western Maryland is proud to be on Medicare’s list of the 97 Best Hospitals for Hip and Knee Replacements. UPMC Western Maryland was the only hospital in Maryland to be named to the list of hospitals where patients tended to have the smoothest recoveries for these two common elective procedures.

This is the first time that Medicare has tracked the outcomes of hip and knee replacement surgeries. UPMC Western Maryland was recognized for doing better than the national average in avoiding complications.

UPMC Western Maryland has a comprehensive approach to total joint replacement that enables patients to get back to normal functioning as quickly as possible.

Prior to surgery, patients attend a two-hour class that helps prepare them for surgery and the recovery process. Included in the pre-operative class are nutrition tips and exercise instruction to improve their readiness for the surgery. It also includes information for making a smooth transition home.

Knowing what to expect in advance puts patients at ease. They also ask a family member or friend to act as a “coach” to provide encouragement and support during their hospital stay and after discharge.

The board-certified orthopedic surgeons associated with the Total Joint Program at UPMC Western Maryland are Roy Carls, M.D.; Tom Ghobrial, M.D., and Gregg Wolff, M.D.
