2013 Recipients of Values in Action Award

Sue Ross, December 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Sue Ross, RN, from 7 South for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of December.

An employee with 40 years of experience, Sue is a proven leader and an excellent charge nurse. She is an outstanding communicator and problem solver who is always willing to help patients and co-workers. Sue brings a wealth of experience to her unit and generously shares her nursing knowledge with staff. She is the ultimate team player and a big reason why the team on 7 South was singled out for Perfect Circle of Care recognition.

Sue is described by co-workers as caring, supportive, respectful, compassionate and very capable. An effective patient advocate, she remains calm in any situation, is a positive model for service excellence and a shining example of the WMHS Core Values at work every day.

Brian Lippold, November 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Brian Lippold from EVS for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of November.

As an integral member of the 7 North Perfect Circle of Care team, Brian consistently goes above and beyond in his daily tasks. He is often one of the first to respond when a bed alarm is activated, staying with the patient until the nursing staff arrives. Brian not only tends to the needs of the patients but also to those of the family and his co-workers.

He is a real team player and always thinks outside of the box to come up with ideas to make positive improvements on the unit. Brian is an excellent role model of service excellence and our core values. He is a tremendous asset to the EVS Department and the 7 North nursing unit!

Debbie Johnson, October 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Debbie Johnson, RN, Breast Care Coordinator, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of October.

An employee with 38 years of experience, Debbie is an outstanding member of the mammography team. As coordinator, she makes sure every detail is covered and provides exceptional service by personally following up with patients on their exam results. Debbie’s pleasant manner and unparalleled clinical knowledge of breast care puts patients at ease and reassures them during their procedures and exams.

Co-workers say Debbie is a team player and a wonderful communicator who is always willing to help patients and co-workers alike. She is described as caring, personable, considerate, kind and very reliable. Debbie is an excellent role model for service excellence and our core values. She is a tremendous asset to her department and WMHS.

Kay Walls, September 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Kay Walls, a phlebotomist in the Laboratory, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of September.

An employee since 2007, Kay is an excellent worker and a team player with a positive attitude and a kind heart. She is truly a leader and someone who is well-respected by her co-workers. Kay always steps up to the challenge when she is needed and takes the time to help newer employees with any questions or guidance. She even helped create a new phlebotomy employee handbook to help with the training of new co-workers.

Kay’s patients love her and look forward to seeing her when they come to have blood drawn. She is described by co-workers as respectful, personable, professional and dependable. Kay is a Service Excellence Champion for her department and is a shining example of the WMHS Core Values in action every day. She is a valuable asset to the Lab and WMHS.

Kathy Dowell, August 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Kathy Dowell, a physical therapist in Rehabilitation Therapy Services, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of August. An employee since 1977, Kathy is a real team player and a dedicated physical therapist who is always willing to share her vast wealth of knowledge and experience with her colleagues.

She is the first one out of the department every morning to start doing PT on new patients. Kathy’s patients adore her and look forward to seeing her warm smile and gentle touch. Co-workers describe her as courteous, respected, well-liked and conscientious.

She never misses a chance to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday or anniversary by organizing something special on that day. Kathy also serves as a role model and mentor to others, exemplifying the WMHS Core Values in everything she does.

Cindy Shipley, July 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Cindy Shipley, a medical office assistant at the Hunt Club Medical Center, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of July. An employee with 36 years of experience, Cindy is an exceptional member of the Urgent Care Center staff. She worked for many years in the Emergency Department at Memorial before joining the Hunt Club.

Cindy is a tireless advocate for patients and a reliable team player who shows genuine concern for patients and staff alike. She goes out of her way to make new employees feel welcome and serves as a role model and mentor for others. Co-workers describe Cindy as caring, respectful, friendly, efficient and courteous.

She is a valuable asset to the Hunt Club and keeps the office running smoothly with her knowledge and expertise. Cindy shows genuine concern for others by exemplifying the WMHS Core Values in everything she does.

Rodney Bowers, June 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Rodney Bowers, a maintenance mechanic in the Facilities Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of June.

Employed since 2006, Rodney is an outstanding worker who takes a great deal of pride in his job and goes out of his way for his customers. In fact, some departments say they love to have Rodney around because all you’ve got to do is ask and he fixes all of the mechanical problems in the department. He is always chipper and eager to help out—ready with a smile and a positive word.

Rodney is described by his co-workers as being proactive, caring, kind, considerate and an effective communicator. According to one nominator, Rodney is what we all should be to each other—very respectful, sincere, self-motivated and genuine. He is a valuable member of the Facilities team, an ambassador for Service Excellence and a shining example of the WMHS Core Values.

Sharon Llewellyn, May 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Sharon Llewellyn, office coordinator in Radiation Oncology at the Schwab Family Cancer Center, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of May.

An employee since 2006, Sharon is a team player and good communicator who constantly strives to help make her department run as smoothly as possible. In her position, she deals with patients, staff, and physicians with great skill and sensitivity. Sharon is the main secretary in Radiation Oncology but she wears many hats as the coordinator of the busy office. She is the first person many cancer patients see and she sets the proper tone with her friendly and compassionate manner.

Co-workers describe Sharon as dependable, caring, efficient, respectful and very flexible. She is always helpful to patients and visitors, exemplifying the WMHS Core Values and Service Excellence standards. Sharon’s co-workers appreciate her attention to detail and her follow-up expertise is legendary. She keeps patients and staff informed about appointments, testing, instructions and other issues that help guide cancer patients through their plan of care.

Garrett Mathews, April 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Garrett Mathews, a registered nurse who is a member of the Clinical Resource Team (CRT), for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of April.

An employee since 2009, Garrett is an exceptional member of the nursing staff with a great work ethic and an encouraging attitude. He is a team player who mixes in well with all staff and fits into every unit he is assigned to. As a member of the CRT (Critical Care Float Pool), Garrett moves flawlessly from the ED to the ICU to the CVU (Cardiovascular Unit) – and he always has a smile and a kind word.

Garrett is a very knowledgeable resource and a good communicator. He is described by co-workers as caring, supportive, cheerful, honest and compassionate. Garrett is a very impressive young man who is helpful, dedicated, easy to work with and always willing to help out. He shows genuine concern and empathy for patients and staff and always makes sure patients are comfortable. Garrett is respected by his peers and the medical staff.

Jim Labutka, March 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Jim Labutka, respiratory therapist with the Respiratory Care Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of March.

An employee with 32 years of experience, Jim is an outstanding caregiver with a pleasant, friendly disposition and a positive attitude that brightens everyone’s day. He is a leader and role model in his department who serves as a mentor for newer co-workers. Jim is the go-to person for the Respiratory Department and he is a valuable resource for a wide range of issues and techniques.

He is described by co-workers as thorough, compassionate, gracious, reliable, kind and very well-respected. Always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help a patient or colleague, Jim is a prime example of Service Excellence and he exemplifies the WMHS Core Values in action.

Ronna Portmess, February 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Ronna Portmess, a charge nurse on 7 North, for being selected as the winner of the Values in Action Award for the month of February. An employee since 1986, she is a dedicated and compassionate caregiver with an engaging personality that puts her patients at ease.

Ronna is an exceptional employee with an optimistic attitude and a positive outlook. She is a knowledgeable resource for newer nurses and is more than willing to serve as a mentor to others. Ronna is a very active member of the nursing staff, lending her skills to patient safety efforts, volunteering for several committees and showing off her artistic skills when needed.

Co-workers describe Ronna as caring, respectful, meticulous, loyal and conscientious. She takes a great deal of pride in her work and is a very good example of Service Excellence. Ronna is known for her excellent clinical skills and the professional way she conducts herself. She often goes above and beyond the call of duty for her patients and her nursing unit.

Sherri Paskowski, January 2013 Recipient

Congratulations to Sherri Paskowski, office coordinator for Centralized Scheduling, for being selected as the January winner of the Values in Action Award. She has worked at WMHS since 1992 and has excelled in a variety of roles over her tenure.

Sherri is an outstanding employee with a positive, can-do attitude that helps create a positive working environment in their busy office. She treats everyone she meets in her work with kindness, respect, understanding, and compassion. Co-workers describe Sherri as friendly, outgoing, supportive and a tireless advocate for our patients. She is an effective leader who is well-respected by the medical staff and co-workers.

Sherri exemplifies Service Excellence by going the extra mile to make sure patients and employees receive the best service possible. She is an extremely valuable asset to WMHS and is the driving force behind the Centralized Scheduling Department.
