U.S. News & World Report Names UPMC Western Maryland Best Hospital in Western Maryland
Cumberland, M.D., September 27, 2021 – UPMC Western Maryland has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as Western Maryland’s Best Hospital for 2021-22. In addition to this honor, UPMC Western Maryland is named as “High Performing” in six specialty services areas.
UPMC Western Maryland earned High Performing ratings for heart failure, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. High Performing is the highest rating U.S. News awards for those types of care.
“We are very proud to be recognized by U.S. News and & World Report for being the best hospital in western Maryland and as a high performing hospital,” said UPMC Western Maryland president, Michele Martz. “This national recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to high-quality care for our patients and the communities we serve.”
The annual Best Hospitals rankings and High Performing Procedures & Conditions ratings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care.
For the 2021-22 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 17 procedures and conditions. Fewer than a third of all hospitals received any high-performing rating, and only 11 earned this rating in all procedures and conditions. The state and metro area rankings recognize hospitals that received high performing ratings across multiple areas of care.
Martz continued, “Our incredible, dedicated team of staff and physicians create the outstanding care and experiences UPMC Western Maryland is known to deliver.”
