About Coronary Artery Bypass
At Western Maryland Regional Medical Center bypass surgery is performed by our highly skilled cardiac surgery team which consists of a cardiac surgeon and his assistants, an anesthesiologist, a perfusionist (who operates the heart-lung machine), and a staff of cardiac nurses. Our cardiac surgeon is Dr. Mark Nelson.
After surgery, you are taken to our brand new Cardiovascular Unit (CVU), which is staffed with both experienced and tenured nurses who will tell your family when you arrive and will allow visitation as soon as possible.

It is important to note that coronary artery bypass surgery is a type of therapy and is not a cure for coronary artery disease. It is still important to make lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, stress reduction and smoking cessation.
