The Western Maryland Health System provides a wide variety of Respiratory Care Services to our patient admitted to the hospital and to outpatients from throughout the tri-state area.  Here is a description of the services available at WMHS:  photo

Respiratory Care is available for inpatient and outpatient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  This service provides therapeutic and diagnostic modalities relating to the care of patients with conditions involving cardio-pulmonary disease processes.  This includes: oxygen therapy, humidity and/or aerosol therapy, chest physiotherapy, mechanical ventilation, pulse oximetry, arterial blood gases and non-invasive ventilation.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory is available for inpatient and outpatient testing Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment.  Diagnostic procedures include: spirometry, spirometry before and after bronchodilation, lung volumes, DLCO, disability determination, arterial blood gases, pulmonary exercise, bronchoscopy assist, methacholine challenge, mask fit testing, pulmonary rehabilitation.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program: This 12-week educational program helps patients learn to live with breathing problems and develop coping mechanisms, such as task simplification and energy conservation.  It also includes breathing retraining and physical conditioning exercises.  One-hour sessions are held usually two times a week.
