Opportunities for Volunteers

The Western Maryland Health System offers a wide variety of rewarding volunteer opportunities for folks of all ages.  Volunteerism is a great way to be of service to your community and to make new friends as well.

Hospital Volunteers

There are many volunteer opportunities at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Some of the valuable services volunteers provide include:

  • Greeting and providing assistance to patients and visitors
  • Assisting with patient care activities
  • Delivering mail and flowers
  • Providing clerical assistance to staff
  • Working in the gift shop

For more information about volunteering for the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, please call Patty Wright at 240-964-8499. You may also email Patty Wright at pwright@wmhs.com.  To apply to become a volunteer with WMHS, please click HERE

Teen Volunteer Program

Young people between the ages of 14 and 18 can serve their community and gain valuable insight into healthcare careers as part of our Teen Volunteer Program at WMHS.  Teens provide assistance to the busy nursing staff and other professional personnel and serve as ambassadors to the health system.  Teen applications are now accepted throughout the year and orientations are held on an individual or small group basis.  For more information, please contact Patty Wright at 240-964-8499 or pwright@wmhs.com.  If you are age 14 to 17 and want to apply to become a teen volunteer at WMHS, please click HERE.

Family Volunteering Opportunity

If you have children or grandchildren between the age of 7 and 14 years old, you may be able to volunteer WITH them for WMHS.  This is a new opportunity for family volunteering.  By volunteering with your children or grandchildren, it gives them a chance to experience how to help others and give back to the community.  This is a trial program and there is an application, orientation, and training process.  If you have a family of two or three individuals, at least one of which is an adult over the age of 18, you may apply to volunteer in this new program. Families will be staffing our Information Desk in the main lobby of the hospital for 2 or 4 hour shifts, with a minimum of two days a month commitment required.  This consistency is necessary to maintain skills needed to perform the job as well as to keep apprised of changes that are constantly occurring.  This opportunity is for evenings and weekends only at this time.  Interested adult representative(s) of the family may contact Patty Wright, Director of Volunteer Services at 240-964-8499 or by email at pwright@wmhs.com.

Hospice Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of the hospice team.  Volunteers in the WMHS Home Hospice Program provide companionship and emotional support for patients and their families and can often enable the family caregiver to take a break from the responsibilities of around-the-clock care.  Other types of assistance provided by these volunteers may include helping with errands, doing light housekeeping, preparing meals, creating diversionary activities, and providing transportation.  For more information about these volunteer opportunities, please call 240-964-9000.

WMHS Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

Volunteers are always welcomed at the WMHS Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Frostburg.  This skilled nursing facility is home to nearly 90 residents.  Volunteers provide companionship to the residents, assist with special activities, and help create a festive, homelike atmosphere.  For more information about volunteering at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, please call 301-689-1391.
