Over the past ten years (2005-2015), the WMHS Foundation has raised over $16,800,000 to support the critically important work of healthcare in our region. Here are a few highlights from those years:
One Dream * One Promise * One Hospital Capital Campaign – In 2006, the Foundation launched this once-in-a-lifetime campaign to help build a new regional medical center. Over 2000 donors, including employees, board members, physicians, auxilians, businesses, and friends generously pledged their support. By 2007, we had surpassed the stretch goal of $7 million and optimistically raised the target by nearly half, setting a new goal of $10 million. When the hospital opened in 2009, we had exceeded that goal as well, raising nearly $11,000,000.
Mission Tours and Mission Breakfast – In a unique community outreach and education format, the Foundation began hosting one hour, inspiring "behind the scenes” programs for small groups. The first department to be highlighted was Trauma, and in 2012, after two years of tours, all participants were invited to return to a special fundraising "Mission Breakfast.” That effort culminated in the initiation of a Friends of the Foundation Society, raising $200,000. Mission Tours continue, highlighting other WMHS services.
The Ted Wolfe Estate – In 2013, the $4,000,000 Ted Wolfe Trust was finalized, making the WMHS Foundation the administrator of this significant funding stream for medical care and educational needs for Allegany County residents. The Wolfe Trust Committee, with board approval, has determined this fund will operate as an endowment, meeting annual needs while lasting into perpetuity.

Cancer Center Expansion and Tribute Wall – In 2013, the Schwab Family Cancer Center was expanded to allow patients to receive clinical consultation, testing, and treatments in one convenient location. The Foundation supported that effort with an expansion campaign, culminating in the unveiling of a beautiful Oncology Tribute Wall. The campaign raised over $200,000, and the wall continues to grow with messages of hope, healing, and appreciation for patients, families, and staff.

Continue the Magic Campaign/Employee Campaign – This first-ever general employee campaign was undertaken in 2011 to support a variety of worthwhile causes…from bolstering patient care to offering financial aid for indigent care, and providing healthcare scholarships for the best and brightest in our community. Although many hospitals hold annual employee campaigns, WMHS decided on a unique format, with employee donors given the opportunity to direct exactly where their gifts would be allocated over a two-year period. Employees responded with engagement and pride, raising nearly $250,000 from their campaign.
Scholarships – Since the program’s inception in 2001, the WMHS Foundation has awarded over $1,000,000 in scholarships, supporting over 150 local students pursuing healthcare careers. A significant number of those students remain at WMHS today, serving our health system and our community.

WMHS Golf Classic – The WMHS Golf Classic, now in its 21st year, has grown into a two-day event, drawing participants from across the region. Nearly 300 guests enjoy a pre-event dinner with outstanding live and silent auctions, and the tournament is played on two local courses—the Old Course in Bedford Springs and the Cumberland Country Club. Under the chairmanship and guidance of local businessman Don Moran, the net proceeds from this event topped the $1,000,000 mark in 2016.

Employee, Family & Friends Auction –This annual summer event was launched in 2012 and has become popular beyond expectations. Dozens of valuable, fun and unique baskets—each presented with an attractive theme—are created and donated by departments across WMHS. Displayed alongside packages donated by local businesses, everything is auctioned by either highest bid or luckiest ticket. Since its inception, this engaging effort has raised over $30,000.

Auxiliary Liaison – The WMHS Foundation serves as the liaison with the WMHS Auxiliary, a group whose rich history spans over a century. In 2004, the Memorial and Sacred Heart Auxiliaries merged, and true to tradition, the "new” auxiliary wasted no time in supporting WMHS. Their ambitious $1 million pledge to the capital campaign became a cornerstone upon which the remainder of the campaign flourished. Additional Auxiliary fundraising activities include the Snow Ball, the area’s premier
black tie event, the Past Perfect Bargain Boutique, the One Dream Gift Shop, and hosting various specialty sales events throughout the year. The Auxiliary supports the vital work the Western Maryland Health System and serves as our health system’s greatest ambassadors.
