History

The WMHS Foundation began by combining two existing entities: the Sacred Heart Foundation and the Memorial Hospital Foundation. The two groups began working in tandem for the benefit of Western Maryland Health System in 1996 and by 2006, the Foundations were combined to create the WMHS Foundation.

Since 2005, the WMHS Foundation has raised over $20 million to support the work, mission, and values of Western Maryland Health System.

Highlights

One Dream * One Promise * One Hospital Capital Campaign

In 2006, the Foundation launched this once-in-a-lifetime campaign to help build a new regional medical center. Over 2,000 donors, including employees, board members, physicians, auxiliary members, businesses, and friends generously pledged their support. By 2007, the Foundation surpassed the stretch goal of $7 million and optimistically raised the target by nearly half, setting a new goal of $10 million. When the hospital opened in 2009, the Foundation had exceeded that goal as well, raising nearly $11,000,000.

The Ted Wolfe Estate

In 2013, the $4,000,000 Ted Wolfe Trust was finalized, making the WMHS Foundation the administrator of this significant funding stream for medical care and educational needs for Allegany County residents. The Wolfe Trust Committee, with board approval, has determined this fund will operate as an endowment, meeting annual needs and lasting far into the future.

  • The grant supports educational and/or medical needs of Allegany County individuals in need of financial assistance
  • The scholarship is designed to fund educational expenses for a deserving medical student who will return to practice at Western Maryland Health System

Cancer Center Expansion and Tribute Wall

In 2013, the Schwab Family Cancer Center expanded to allow patients to receive clinical consultation, testing, and treatments in one convenient location. The Foundation supported that effort with an expansion campaign. The campaign raised over $200,000 and included a beautiful Oncology Tribute Wall. The wall continues to grow with messages of hope, healing, and appreciation for patients, families, and staff.

Scholarships

Since the program’s inception in 2001, the WMHS Foundation has awarded over $1,022,000 in scholarships, supporting over 150 local students pursuing healthcare careers. A significant number of those students remain at WMHS today. Ultimately, the return on investment is that these students will continue their professional careers locally, at WMHS.

WMHS Golf Classic

The WMHS Golf Classic has grown into a two-day event, drawing participants from across the region. Nearly 300 guests enjoy a pre-event dinner with outstanding live and silent auctions. The tournament is played on two local courses—the Old Course in Bedford Springs and the Cumberland Country Club. This event has raised over $1,000,000 for WMHS in its history.

WMHS Auxiliary

An ambitious $1 million pledge to the One Dream * One Promise * One Hospital Capital Campaign, as the most significant contribution to date, became a cornerstone upon which the remainder of the campaign was built. Each year, the Auxiliary makes generous pledges, which are funded by various Ways and Means projects.

WMHS Auxiliary

The daVinci® Robot Campaign

On July 14, 2016, the WMHS Auxiliary made a $150,000 pledge to the Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery (RALS) program at Western Maryland Health System–the first pledge in support of the WMHS Foundation commitment of $1.25 million toward the program. Procedures completed with RALS state-of-the-art technology, the daVinci robot, are less invasive than conventional surgery. The work of highly trained surgeons, with precise instruments controlled by robotic arms, results in less pain, shorter recovery times, better outcomes, and more procedures available locally.
