WMHS's Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (CIRU) @ Memorial

Our Philosophy: Provide high quality, cost effective rehabilitation to help our patients achieve the highest possible level of function

Annual Activities

January 1, 2004 - December 31, 2004

Services provided:

At least two types of therapies (physical, occupational, speech/language therapy) for a general average of 3 hours per day. Additional services provided were recreational therapy, rehabilitative nursing, medical care, nutritional consultation, supportive psychotherapy, and respiratory therapy.

  • 388 patients served
  • Average age - 76
  • Average number of days in CIRU - 9
  • 85% returned to their homes; 9% were admitted or returned to a long-term care facility; 6% were admitted to an acute care facility (hospital).

Patients admitted to the CIRU have a significant disability that restricts their ability to function independently. The causes of impairment for the patients this year were:

  • orthopedic-related, such as hip fractures, hip replacements, and knee replacements (216 persons)
  • strokes (56 persons)
  • amputations (3 persons)
  • non-traumatic spinal cord dysfunction, brain and neurological disorders (113 persons)

Feedback:

  • 100 % of the respondents indicated that their stay in the rehab program made them more able to function independently when they returned home.
  • In general, they were satisfied with both the results and the processes of their rehabilitation experience.
  • Many stated that they felt the "homelike" atmosphere and the caring professional staff encouraged them to do their best, even though at times it was difficult.
