Dr. Mavromatis Joins Regional Cancer Center

The Western Maryland Health System is pleased to announce that Blanche Mavromatis, M.D., has joined its medical staff.

Dr. Mavromatis joins us from an academic practice at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, division of Hematology/Oncology, of Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, that dates back to 2001. There, she saw patients in the outpatient and inpatient oncology units, as well as in the apheresis unit. She was the principal investigator of many clinical trials, including trials of the Large Cooperative group, Cancer and Leukemia group B(CALGB), institutional trials, and pharmaceutical trials. Additionally, she was actively involved in teaching the medical students, residents and oncology fellows. Her research interests and medical publications centered around breast cancer, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). She also served on Georgetown's institutional review board, and their data and monitoring safety committees.

Board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, Dr. Mavromatis completed her internship, residency and fellowship while at Georgetown University and did a lymphoma fellowship at the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She earned her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, after graduating from nearby Bryn Mawr College.

Dr. Mavromatis will contribute to the continued growth of the WMHS oncology program, while offering quality and compassionate medical care to her patients. She is looking forward to forging strong relationships with the staff, her new colleagues and the Cumberland community at large.
