Dr. Scott V. Watkins - Radiation Oncologist
Honorary Chair for 2006 Relay For Life

As a radiation oncologist, Dr. Watkins is very aware of what people undergoing cancer treatments have to endure... the daily trips, hair loss and the burden of paying for medication. He helps patients make treatment decisions everyday and is especially sensitive to their needs.

That is why he is lending his support to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life by serving as its Honorary Chairman. Funds raised by this annual event help patients pay for travel, wigs, and pain and nausea medications, along with providing programs such as "Look Good Feel Better" and "I Can Cope".

"I feel a responsibility to the community to ensure that these programs are available locally," explained Dr. Watkins. "A free makeover for a woman undergoing cancer treatments can significantly bolster her self-esteem and help her to cope with some of the side effects of chemotherapy, such as hair loss. We all are aware of today's high gas prices so patients really benefit from the travel grants."

"The American Cancer Society also offers educational programs in cancer prevention and early detection, which can be key to a good outcome in a cancer diagnosis." says Dr. Watkins.

"I'm proud to be a part of this local event in the fight against cancer and ask that the community support this great cause," Watkins concluded.

Watkins invites all local physicians and cancer patients to join him at the track at Allegany College of Maryland on Friday, June 2, where he will speak at the opening ceremonies slated to start at 6 p.m.
