New Treatment Program for Lymphedema Now Available at WMHS
WMHS offers a therapy program through its Outpatient Therapy Services Occupational Therapy department. A lymphedema treatment clinic is staffed by occupational therapy staff Sarah Blocker, MS, OTR/L, and Tracy Heller, COTA/L. Both therapists recently completed specialized training and received MLD/CDP (Manual Lymph Drainage/Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy) certification from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies. The lymphedema program at WMHS was the first of its kind in the area. Lymphedema occurs as a result of an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes abnormal swelling of the arms, legs, trunk, face, neck or abdomen. Lymphedema develops when lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes are damaged in surgery or by trauma or are impaired or missing. It often affects women who have had breast cancer surgery. At WMHS, patients with lymphedema receive one-on-one care from a certified therapist. Treatment consists of manual lymphatic drainage, a light touch massage that helps to prevent damage to the tissue and promote lymph flow. In addition, bandaging is done to decrease the congestion of the limb. Additionally, the patient receives education on bandaging, skin care and exercises. In most cases, the treatment is covered by insurance companies. A physician's prescription is necessary to begin treatment.
