WMHS Names Physician of the Year

Dr. Gregg Wolff was named Physician of Year at the Western Maryland Health System's Physician Recognition Gala that was held last night at Rocky Gap Lodge. Dr. Wolff was chosen from among 35 physicians who were nominated by their peers on the medical staff and by health system employees.

Dr. Wolff was singled out for his commitment to his patients, his profession, his community, and his country. He is dedicated to providing his patients with the highest quality orthopedic care and treats all of his patients with respect and compassion. His nominators called him a role model for teamwork, inspiring others to work together to achieve positive outcomes and a harmonious working environment.

A member of the U.S. Naval Reserve for the past 17 years, Commander Wolff was called to active duty and served as head of the orthopedics department at the U.S. Military Hospital in Camp Arifjan in Kuwait from January through September 2005. He considered it an honor to serve and care for soldiers fighting in Iraq although it meant considerable personal sacrifices.

A board certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Wolff has been practicing in Cumberland since October of 1995. He grew up in suburban Baltimore and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University in 1989. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Maryland, where he also completed his surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency. Dr. Wolff then went to the University of Oklahoma to complete a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine. While in Oklahoma, Dr. Wolff participated directly in the care of victims of the Federal Building bombing in April of 1995.

Dr. Wolff has played an active role in medical staff affairs at WMHS, including serving as president of the medical staff and chair of the Department of Surgery. Since making Cumberland his home, he has donated his time to running screening clinics for the Shriners' Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and serving as team physician for the Fort Hill football team.

Other physicians who were nominated for Physician of the Year include George Breza, Nick Casto, Tom Chappell, Roy Chisholm, Habib Chotani, Maureen Conroy, Michael Ehlers, Reed Erickson.
