VOLUNTEER OPENINGS AT WMHS

The Western Maryland Health System has volunteer positions available in a variety of departments and locations. Here is listing of the current volunteer opportunities available at WMHS and a description of the type of work involved in each volunteer area:

Emergency Department – Memorial Campus:
This area is looking for patient advocates to enhance patient care and be an advocate for the patient and family while being treated. Those interested in this position will complete Patient Advocate volunteer training to learn how to better meet the needs of this area. The hours most needed are from 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights.

Outpatient Department/GI – Braddock and Memorial Campus:
This position is for someone willing to help with the discharge of patients, taking them in wheelchairs to waiting cars. A volunteer must be able to push a wheelchair and have appropriate conversational skills to deal closely with our patient population. This is an extremely busy area and can use help every day of the week, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Joint Destination Center:
Volunteers in this area will be specially trained to do rehab assisting duties unique to this unit. Those interested in this opportunity should be able to push a wheel chair, lift some items (nothing over 40 lbs.), be willing and able to learn about the new unit and how it operates.

Home Care/Home Hospice:
This area is looking for a volunteer to help with office-type work like putting together charts, filing, etc. This is located in the former Sister's quarters adjacent to Braddock Hospital Campus.

Meals on Wheels – Emergency Packers Needed:
If you are willing and able to substitute in an emergency as a packer for Meals on Wheels (especially in bad weather days when schools are only on a 2 hour delay), please let us know. Perhaps you live close to the hospital or have reliable transportation and would not mind helping out in an emergency? You can be included in the “emergency packer” list. The regular substitute packer list is getting low as well. If you can sub pack on only good weather days, we would also like to know that as well.

Gift Shop Volunteers Needed
There are several volunteer opportunities that exist in the Gift Shops at the Western Maryland Health System. There is a need for volunteers at gift shops on both the Braddock and Memorial Hospital Campuses. This is a great opportunity to someone to help out by volunteering in their local community. The gift shops are an important part of the experience at the hospitals and they serve a vital purpose for the needs of visitors, families and employees.

Contact Volunteer Services at WMHS:
If you are interested in any of these volunteer positions with the Western Maryland Health System, please call Patricia Wright, Director of Volunteer Services, at 301-723-4048 or email her at pwright@wmhs.com and request an application packet. Every new volunteer must complete an application, a health appraisal form (signed by a physician) and pass a background check. Orientations are held on an individual basis following receipt of the paperwork mentioned. Please call and leave your name and address information to apply for any of the above positions.
