May 2013 Recipient

Sharon Llewellyn

     Congratulations to Sharon Llewellyn, office coordinator in Radiation Oncology at the Schwab Family Cancer Center, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of May.
     An employee since 2006, Sharon is a team player and good communicator who constantly strives to help make her department run as smoothly as possible.  In her position, she deals with patients, staff and physicians with great skill and sensitivity.  Sharon is the main secretary in Radiation Oncology but she wears many hats as the coordinator of the busy office.  She is the first person many cancer patients see and she sets the proper tone with her friendly and compassionate manner.    
     Co-workers describe Sharon as dependable, caring, efficient, respectful and very flexible.  She is always helpful to patients and visitors, exemplifying the WMHS Core Values and Service Excellence standards.  Sharon’s co-workers appreciate her attention to detail and her follow-up expertise is legendary. She keeps patients and staff informed about appointments, testing, instructions and other issues that help guide cancer patients through their plan of care.

Garrett Mathews

      Congratulations to Garrett Mathews, a registered nurse who is a member of the Clinical Resource Team (CRT), for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of April.

      An employee since 2009, Garrett is an exceptional member of the nursing staff with a great work ethic and an encouraging attitude.  He is a team player who mixes in well with all staff and fits into every unit he is assigned to.  As a member of the CRT (Critical Care Float Pool), Garrett moves flawlessly from the ED to the ICU to the CVU (Cardiovascular Unit) - and he always has a smile and a kind word. 

      Garrett is a very knowledgeable resource and a good communicator.  He is described by co-workers as caring, supportive, cheerful, honest and compassionate.  Garrett is a very impressive young man who is helpful, dedicated, easy to work with and always willing to help out.  He shows genuine concern and empathy for patients and staff, and always makes sure patients are comfortable.  Garrett is respected by his peers and the medical staff.

Jim Labutka

      Congratulations to Jim Labutka, respiratory therapist with the Respiratory Care Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of March. 

      An employee with 32 years of experience, Jim is an outstanding caregiver with a pleasant, friendly disposition and a positive attitude that brightens everyone’s day.  He is a leader and role model in his department who serves as a mentor for newer co-workers.  Jim is the go-to person in the Respiratory Department and he is a valuable resource for a wide range of issues and techniques. 

      He is described by co-workers as thorough, compassionate, gracious, reliable, kind and very well-respected.  Always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help a patient or colleague, Jim is a prime example of Service Excellence and he exemplifies the WMHS Core Values in action.

Ronna Portmess

     Congratulations to Ronna Portmess, a charge nurse on 7 North, for being selected as the winner of the Values in Action Award for the month of February.  An employee since 1986, she is a dedicated and compassionate caregiver with an engaging personality that puts her patients at ease.       

     Ronna is an exceptional employee with an optimistic attitude and a positive outlook.  She is a knowledgeable resource for newer nurses and is more than willing to serve as a mentor to others.  Ronna is a very active member of the nursing staff, lending her skills to patient safety efforts, volunteering for several committees and showing off her artistic skills when needed.

     Co-workers describe Ronna as caring, respectful, meticulous, loyal and conscientious.  She takes a great deal of pride in her work and is a very good example of Service Excellence.  Ronna is known for her excellent clinical skills and the professional way she conducts herself.  She often goes above and beyond the call of duty for her patients and her nursing unit.

Sherri Paskowski

     Congratulations to Sherri Paskowski, office coordinator for Centralized Scheduling, for being selected as the January winner of the Values in Action Award.  She has worked at WMHS since 1992 and has excelled in a variety of roles over her tenure. 

     Sherri is an outstanding employee with a positive, can-do attitude that helps create a positive working environment in their busy office.  She treats everyone she meets in her work with kindness, respect, understanding and compassion.  Co-workers describe Sherri as friendly, outgoing, supportive and a tireless advocate for our patients.  She is an effective leader who is well-respected by the medical staff and co-workers. 

     Sherri exemplifies Service Excellence by going the extra mile to make sure patients and employees receive the best service possible.  She is an extremely valuable asset to WMHS and is the driving force behind the Centralized Scheduling Department.

Tim Blank

     Congratulations to Tim Blank, a cardio invasive specialist with the Heart Institute's Interventional Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of December.

     An employee since 1991, Tim is an exceptional employee who works very closely with cardiologists to assist with cardiac catheterization procedures.  He is a team player and is willing to help others learn new techniques, especially when it improves patient outcomes.  Tim is a valuable resource to the Interventional team and he is a tireless advocate for his patients.

     His co-workers describe Tim as respectful, caring, gentle and compassionate.  He is very good with patients and their families who are sometimes apprehensive about their procedure.  Tim puts them at ease with his caring nature and thoughtful manner.  He is a valuable asset to WMHS and the Heart Institute.

Stacy Mackereth

    Congratulations to Stacy Mackereth, a specimen processing specialist in the Laboratory, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of November. 

    An employee with 26 years of experience, Stacy is an outstanding member of Lab staff and a valuable asset to the health system.  Stacy is a team player who promotes a positive work environment and consistently lends a helping hand to her co-workers and patients.  

    Co-workers describe her as cheerful, supportive, generous, caring and conscientious.  Stacy is a good communicator and often goes above and beyond the call of duty to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.  She shows genuine compassion and concern for everyone she interacts with and is a perfect example of Service Excellence and exemplifies the WMHS Core Values.

Barb Barnard

    Congratulations to Barb Barnard, office coordinator in Clinics and Practices, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of October.  She runs the busy office for cardiothoracic surgeons Dr. Mark Nelson and Dr. Subrato Deb. 

    An employee since 2007, Barb is a very hard worker with a fabulous attitude and a skill for organizing the practice and office staff for maximum efficiency.  Her efforts have resulted in decreased wait times and increased satisfaction for patients.  Barb also received additional training in medical coding and billing, which has made a huge difference in the revenue stream for the office. 

   She has a great sense of humor and puts patients at ease with her nurturing and caring manner.  Barb arrives early, stays late and is willing to do whatever is needed for patients to have a successful recovery.  She is described by her co-workers as dedicated, thorough, kind and generous.

Mary Helen Yutzy

     Congratulations to Mary Helen Yutzy, a nurse in ICU, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of September. 

     An employee since 1989, Mary Helen is an excellent nurse and patient advocate with an outstanding work ethic.  She is a team player who is described by her co-workers as dependable, positive, kind, thoughtful and compassionate.  Mary Helen always has a smile on her face and arrives ready to do whatever is needed to provide top-notch care. 

     She shares her knowledge and clinical expertise with her co-workers and is more than willing to help newer nurses learn the ICU.  Her colleagues say Mary Helen handles any situation with a calm, cool and collected manner that is reassuring to patients, families and staff.

Asa Simmons

Congratulations to Asa Simmons, Physician Support Analyst in the Information Technology Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of August.

A member of the IT staff since 2004, Asa is an excellent employee and a team player who is a great project leader and problem solver. He has been instrumental in working with Clinics and Physician practices, as well as numerous other departments at WMHS, on the implementation of a new software program.

Asa is well-liked by his customers and processes good critical thinking skills. Co-workers describe him as diligent, friendly, respectful, optimistic and conscientious. Asa has been the recipient of several Peak Performer nominations and multiple nominations for the Values in Action Award.

Debbie Greise

Congratulations to Debbie Greise, nurse clinician in Same Day Surgery, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of July.

An employee since 1981, Debbie is an excellent nurse and a knowledgeable resource for the Same Day staff. She is the go-to person for her unit and is very advanced technically. Debbie has great critical thinking skills and always strives to improve processes. Co-workers say she is dedicated, kind, efficient, modest and conscientious. Debbie enjoys working with nursing students and generously shares her clinical expertise with students and staff alike.

She is a nursing role model and exemplifies our Core Values as well as our Service Excellence standards. In fact, Debbie has received many peak performer nominations and multiple nominations for the Values in Action Award.

Congratulations to Sharon Amick, payroll specialist in the Finance Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of June.

An employee for 25 years, Sharon is an outstanding worker who is more than willing to help others by anticipating needs and follow through on the smallest details. She is a very good communicator and prides herself on being helpful, efficient, thorough and flexible.

Sharon is more than willing to learn new technology and take on more responsibility. She is always ready with a friendly smile and a thoughtful word of encouragement that brightens everyone’s day.

Wendy Sarver

     Congratulations to Wendy Sarver, a diagnostic tech in the Radiology Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of May.

     An employee since 2004, Wendy is an excellent member of the Radiology staff who is hard-working, kind-hearted and never hesitates to take the initiative to get the job done.  Her pleasant demeanor and respectful nature puts patients at ease and makes them feel secure during their appointment. 

      Wendy is a tireless advocate for radiation safety and leads by example.  She serves as a mentor to students and holds everyone in her department accountable.

       Congratulations to Ruth Romesburg, a registered nurse in ICU, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of May. 

       An employee since 1975, Ruth is an outstanding employee and a compassionate caregiver with a positive attitude.  She is a team player who works very well with other departments to coordinate the delivery of superb patient care.

       An employee since 1992, Glenda is an outstanding nurse and a team player who shares her knowledge and experience with her co-workers.  She has very good patient and staff education skills, often serving as a role model or mentor for newer employees.

Chris Seibert

      Congratulations to Chris Seibert, a housekeeping aide in Environmental Services, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of March.

    Chris is assigned to the ICU and CVU nursing units and has been working at WMHS since 2002.  She is an excellent employee with a great attitude and a friendly, pleasant demeanor. 

      Chris is a very good communicator and a team player who looks out for our patients, visitors and fellow co-workers.  She is described as dedicated, polite, flexible, respectful and extremely reliable.  Chris is a very hard worker and an asset to the EVS staff and WMHS.

Alda Westfall

       Congratulations to Alda Westfall, a nurse in Labor & Delivery, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of February. 

       An employee for 31 years, Alda is an outstanding clinician and a very dedicated professional.  She is a positive role model and team player who helps mentor new members of the staff.  Alda gladly shares her expertise with others and often goes out of her way to advocate for her patients and their families.    

       Co-workers say Alda is a pleasure to work with and she is described as caring, friendly, reliable and exceptionally kind.  She offers to work additional hours and never complains.  Alda is a valuable asset to Labor & Delivery and WMHS.

Joshua Payne

     Congratulations to Joshua Payne, a diagnostic tech in the Laboratory, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of January. 

     An employee since 2008, Josh is an excellent, hard-working phlebotomist who is a team player with a positive attitude.  He is a role model for others and gifted communicator.  Josh is often called upon to do the challenging draws and he always has a smile on his face. 

     Co-workers describe Josh as dedicated, caring, respectful, polite, kind, diligent and compassionate.  He often goes the extra mile to make patients comfortable or to help a co-worker.  Josh has been nominated many times as a peak performer and received multiple nods for the Values in Action Award.

Shirley Young

      Congratulations to Shirley Young, a transcriptionist in Medical Records, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of December. 

      An employee since 1999, Shirley is an outstanding member of the transcription team and valuable asset to WMHS.  She is a good communicator and a tireless advocate for our patients.  Shirley is described by co-workers as versatile, dependable, caring, flexible and very efficient. 

      Her organizational skills are legendary and she puts them to good use by pulling people together for birthdays, celebrations and other festive occasions that help to create a positive work environment.  Shirley is a great role model for others and serves as a Service Excellence Champion for her department.

Carol Strawderman

     Congratulations to Carol Strawderman, a registrar in the Registration/Admitting Department, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of November. 

     Carol has been an employee since 1984 and she works at multiple sites, including the WAC, Johnson Heights and the hospital.  An outstanding employee, Carol is a team player who often goes above and beyond her duties to provide patient-focused service.

Debbie Dayton

       Congratulations to Debbie Dayton, a secretary for the Schwab Family Cancer Center, for being selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award for the month of October.

       An employee since 1999, Debbie is an excellent worker with an outgoing and enthusiastic personality.  Her upbeat and positive attitude keeps everyone smiling and she is a true patient advocate.    

       Debbie coordinates and participates in many of the extra activities and community events of the Cancer Center.  She is a shining example of Service Excellence at its best.

     Congratulations to Belinda "Dee" Lockard, Care Management, on being named the Values in Action Award winner for February.

     Dee began her career at WMHS in 1980 and currently serves as a Utilization Management Analyst in the Care Management Dept.

Taryn Bennett, RN

     Congratulations to Taryn Bennett, Wound Care, on being named January’s Values in Action Award winner.

     Taryn has been an employee since 1988.  A full-time ET nurse, she regularly works as a staff RN on 5 West. 

     Taryn is a tireless patient advocate and a great educator for staff, patients and their families.  

     She is the ultimate team player, working diligently with a wide variety of departments while treating everyone with respect and kindness.

Emma Brashear

   An employee for 21 years, Emma was selected as the WMHS Values in Action recipient for the month of July.   

   She works in Community Health and Wellness at the health system, where she is a tireless and compassionate advocate for all of her clients, especially those who lack the resources for a reasonable quality of life.   

   She has a high regard for the dignity and worth of each person and is committed to our mission of improving the health status of our community.

Justin Carr

     Justin was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of June.  He works as a distribution and receiving technician in the health system's warehouse.  

     An employee since 2007, Justin was a key player in setting up and maintaining our PAR systems on the nursing units both at Braddock Hospital and at the new hospital.  He is a valuable asset to the Materials Management Department. 

    Justin always displays a positive and professional attitude and does everything he can to make his “customers” on the nursing units very satisfied.

Lisa Jackson

    An employee for 15 years, Lisa was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of May.  She is an operating room tech in Perioperative Services and works with Drs. Nelson and Deb on open heart surgeries and other procedures.  Lisa has an excellent working relationship with the surgeons, her co-workers, and the other departments she deals with in coordinating patient care.  According to a co-worker who nominated her, "It’s obvious in everything she says and does that our patients are her number one priority.”  Lisa is a very knowledgeable resource and is dedicated to improving patient outcomes.

Devon Corle

An employee since 2003, Devon was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of April.  She is a nurse in the float pool in Nursing Services.  Devon is an excellent clinician and a team player who goes out of her way to help patients and co-workers.  She has a great, upbeat attitude and a positive work ethic. Devon remains calm in emergency situations and upholds the WMHS service excellence standards and core values at all times.  Co-workers described her as thoughtful, meticulous, caring, and very polite.  She is an outstanding role model and mentor to new nursing staff and she is very knowledgeable about pediatric nursing procedures.

Glenda Nealis

An employee with 10 years of experience, Glenda was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of March.  She works as a an aide in the Dietary Department, where her catering skills are a valuable asset.  Glenda is an outstanding employee with a friendly, outgoing nature and a can-do attitude.  She is very organized and pays attention to the smallest details.  Glenda is a team player and a good communicator who is described by co-workers as helpful, reliable, courteous, and very supportive.  She is an advocate for our customers and her colleagues, welcoming new employees by taking the time to show them how to do things the right way.

Laura Livingston

An employee since 1996, Laura was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award winner for the month of February.  She is a physical therapy assistant in the Physical Therapy Department.  Laura is an excellent employee who displays compassion and a genuine concern for the patients in her care.  She has a positive attitude and her thoughtful, gentle nature provides great comfort to both patients and staff alike.  Laura is a Service Excellence Champion and a great role model for others.

Robert Clites

An employee with 20 years of experience, Bob Clites was selected as the WMHS Values in Action award winner for January.  He works as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant at the Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  Bob is an outstanding employee with a respectful and positive attitude.  He is a team player who has an excellent rapport with residents, family and staff.  Bob is very safety conscience, anticipates the needs of residents and is very welcoming to new employees.

Congratulations to Diane Kenner, 3 South Braddock Campus, on being named November’s Values in Action award winner.  Diane has been an employee for 24 years.  She is a very hard worker and a dedicated caregiver.  Diane always anticipates what her patients needs are and alerts their nurses when are needed.  She also has a good rapport with patients, families and co-workers.  Diane has a great sense of humor and a wonderful attitude.  She is a valuable asset to WMHS.

An employee for 7 years, Kim was named the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of October.  She is an aide in the Housekeeping Department at Braddock.  Kim was nominated because she is known to be a team player, promotes a positive work environment, and is respectful to patients, families and co-workers.   She is described as courteous, helpful, neat and very organized.  Kim brings a cheerful smile to work every day and it helps brighten everyone's day.  She is a great asset to her department and WMHS.

Beth Broadwater

An employee with 21 years of experience, Beth was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of September.  She is a unit secretary on the 4 North nursing unit on the Braddock campus.  Beth is an outstanding employee who keeps everything running smoothly with her excellent organizational skills and intuitive knack for anticipating the needs of both the staff and patients.  Co-workers say she is respectful, caring, energetic, polite and very efficient.  Beth often goes above and beyond the call of duty, and has been described as the glue that holds her unit together.

Mary Lou Mosbey

An employee since 2004, Mary Lou was selected as the WMHS Values in Action Award recipient for the month of August.  She is a mental health professional in Emergency Mental Health at Braddock.  Mary Lou is an excellent employee and leader who is a thoughtful advocate for patients and their families.  She is a team player and always remains calm in stressful situations, helping everyone around her stay grounded.  Co-workers describe Mary Lou as reliable, efficient, respectful and compassionate.

Crystal Gardner

An employee for seven years, Crystal was selected as the Western Maryland Health System’s Values in Action Award recipient for the month of July.  She is a nurse on the High Level Care Unit on the Memorial Campus.  Crystal is an outstanding employee with a positive attitude and a gentle, caring touch.  She is always available to lend a hand, give advice and is a valuable resource for the High Level Care Unit.  Congratulations, Crystal!

Lori Evans

An employee since 1988, Lori was selected as the Western Maryland Health System Values in Action Award recipient for the month of June.She is a medical lab technician and works throughout the health system’s Laboratory, including Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank and Microbiology.  She joined the Lab at Braddock 21 years ago and has been employed there ever since.  Congratulations, Lori!

An employee since 1994, Julie was selected as the Western Maryland Health System’s Values in Action Award recipient for the month of May. Julie works as an operator in the Communications Department on the Braddock campus, where she works the evening shift on the switchboard.

An employee since 1991, Missy was selected as the Western Maryland Health System’s Values in Action recipient for the month of March. Missy is the coordinator for the health system’s Dialysis Unit, where she is responsible for the daily operation of the unit.
