Dr. James Deren Receives Independent Medical Examiner Certification
James B. Deren, M.D., a physician with the Occupational Health Program at the Western Maryland Heath System, recently became a Certified Independent Medical Examiner, or IME. Independent Medical Examiners are physicians not otherwise involved in the care or treatment of the patient who conduct exams at the request of employers seeking to determine the health status of their employees.
These exams are critical in Worker’s Compensation claims and other long-term medical disability cases. IME exams help determine the legal degree of impairment of workers with chronic injury and disability. Such impairment ratings are mandatory for final compensation outcomes.
Dr. Deren was certified by the internationally recognized American Board of Independent Medical Examiners, which serves as the quality assurance organization for IME accreditation. He has been a member of the medical staff at WMHS since 1995 and is the Medical Review Officer for the health system’s Occupational Health Program.
