WMHS Doctors Day 2012
Every year, March 30 is recognized as National Doctors’ Day and WMHS would like to salute our excellent Medical Staff, which consists of approximately 228 dedicated physicians representing 38 medical and surgical specialties. Please join us in thanking our doctors for providing compassionate, quality care to our patients.
The History of Doctors' Day
The first Doctors' Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors' Day.
On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctor's Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as "National Doctor's Day."
Thank You to Our Doctors - We want to thank our doctors for their hard work and tireless dedication to our hospital and our community.
WMHS Foundation Provides a Way to Celebrate National Doctors' Day
(A letter from Karen Johnson - Executive Director of the WMHS Foundation)
Their words change lives. Their compassion brings comfort. Their dedication offers hope. They are your doctors, and they do so much more than simply heal bodies. Their personal care touches hearts and impacts lives—lives like yours and mine.
Every year on March 30, hospitals and communities across the country celebrate National Doctor’s Day. The Western Maryland Health System Medical Staff is proud to be called home for over 200 skilled and compassionate doctors who provide superior care, surprisingly close.
You can help us celebrate National Doctor’s Day and make this spring season even more meaningful for a physician who is special to you! Honor a doctor whose exceptional care made a difference in your life by writing a personal note of thanks on the enclosed tribute card.
Then send your message, along with a tax-deductible gift of $25, $50, $100, $250—or any amount—to the Western Maryland Health System Foundation by Friday, April 27, 2012. Not only will your gift be an encouragement to a dedicated physician, but it will also help us continue to provide compassionate care with clinical excellence for thousands of individuals. From Doctor’s Day throughout the following month, we will share the personal notes of thanks with your doctor (giving amounts will remain confidential).
Thank you in advance for making this Doctor’s Day, and this spring season, extra special for the physician in your life, and for your support for health care in our community.
