Superior Care...Surprisingly Close

Capital Campaign

In 1996, the governing boards at Cumberland’s two hospitals had a dream…a vision of one healthcare system. That vision promised one system that would be able to bring new services to our region. One system that would provide quality care most efficiently and more effectively. One system that would do more for the community than two independent hospitals could ever do alone.Working as the Western Maryland Health System since 1996, we have surpassed the capabilities of a traditional “community hospital.” With promises kept, we now provide a level of care that patients once had to travel to Baltimore, Washington, or Pittsburgh to receive. In 2004, the time came to take this dream one step further: Build one hospital to provide regional healthcare services in one state-of-the-art facility.

Our New Hospital

The new Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on Willowbrook Road in Cumberland offers so many advantages:

  • All inpatient and outpatient services in one, centralized location
  • Patient care areas designed for today’s medical equipment and information technology
  • Easier access for patients with conveniently located outpatient services
  • Comfortable and friendly spaces for patients and their families
  • Expanded dining facilities, including a food court and 24-hour food service
  • Reduced operating costs with one, more energy efficient facility

The new hospital has 7 floors and 585,000 square feet. Floors 1 through 3 house diagnosis and treatments services, the fourth floor is the mechanical floor, and Floors 5 through 7 are an inpatient tower with 275 beds.

By choosing the Willowbrook Road location, we developed a medical complex that includes WMHS, the Allegany Health Department, and Allegany College of Maryland. The new site is easily accessible from Interstate 68 and other routes, and there is plenty of room along the Willowbrook Road corridor for potential development of health-related facilities.

Our promises have been kept. We have accomplished so much since the Western Maryland Health System was formed in 1996:

  • Developed eight Specialty Centers to centralize and enhance services
  • Introduced new services, such as the WMHS Heart Institute that has been nationally recognized for quality are
  • Increased access and availability of care through innovative programs
  • Provided over $85 million in community benefits and charity care
  • Kept healthcare costs among the lowest in the state of Maryland
  • Maintained our status as the largest employer in Western Maryland with approximately 2,400 employees
