Volunteers Event to be held at WMHS on January 29
If you or someone you know has ever thought about volunteering, now is a great time to explore openings at the Western Maryland Health System. WMHS Volunteer Services is hosting an information session for the community on Tuesday, January 29, at 2:00 p.m. in the hospital’s auditorium.
There are many different volunteer positions available, including patient advocates and new safety round volunteers. Patient advocates are vital to the satisfaction of patients, and these volunteers should be friendly and out-going. They provide companionship and emotional support for those who have no friends or family to visit.
Patient advocates also interact with other patients and assess patient satisfaction by listening to their comments and concerns. The information obtained is then used to improve the overall environment for patients, visitors and staff. Volunteer patient advocates also link out-of-town patients and their families to area resources and serve as a liaison between patients, families, and hospital departments.
The new Safety Round volunteer position will help ensure that at-risk patients are cared for in the safest environment possible. Other volunteer opportunities include working at the information-giving areas or in the gift shop, as well as various other helping roles that enhance the care provided to patients and visitors.
Staff at the Health System work hard to place volunteers in an environment that matches their interests, qualifications, skills and personality.
"We do our best to meet the needs of the volunteer, as well as the needs of the departments that utilize volunteers. We have a process that enables us to make the best match possible, which works out well for the department, volunteer, and most importantly, our patients,” says Patricia Wright, Director of Volunteer Services.
Representatives from various volunteer positions will be available to answer your questions. There will be free services offered that day, such as blood pressure screenings. Refreshments will be served and everyone is eligible for door prizes.
Advance registration is requested. Anyone wishing to attend the informational session should contact Patricia Wright at 240-964-8499, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
