UPMC Western Maryland offers a coordinated approach to rehabilitation during your hospital stay, including physical, occupational, and speech therapies. We also provide specialized long-term outpatient physical and speech therapies. Our therapy team will work with you individually on a treatment plan based on your functional need, so you can get back to enjoying your everyday activities. Outpatient Therapies

Physical Therapy

Our dedicated team of licensed therapists provides individualized care that helps you achieve your specific goals through physical and speech rehabilitation and therapy. Our team of licensed physical therapists most often work with individuals experiencing:

  • Orthopedic pain conditions of the extremities and spine
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee, foot/ankle, spine
  • Headaches
  • TMD/TMJ
  • Vertigo/dizziness
  • Work-related injuries
  • Balance problems
  • Joint replacement therapy
  • Overuse injuries (tendinitis, bursitis, sprains, and strains)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Nerve pain such as sciatica, radiating arm pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • CVA (stroke), spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological conditions

Speech Therapy

Outpatient speech therapy services can be scheduled once you have been discharged home and a referral is received from your physician by calling 240-964-1800.

Pediatric Speech Therapy

Pediatric Speech Therapy services are available at the UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Cumberland, located on the first floor of the UPMC Johnson Heights Medical Building at 625 Kent Avenue.

Our speech-language pathologists hold certificates of clinical competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and are licensed by the state of Maryland to treat children struggling with development of speech, language, and swallowing abilities.

Pediatric Speech Therapy services include:

  • Articulation and phonological disorders
  • Expressive and receptive language disorders
  • Motor speech disorders such as apraxia of speech and dysarthria
  • Pragmatic and social skills
  • Fluency
  • Feeding/swallowing

Inpatient Therapies

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy (PT) can help your restore their your function. Our UPMC Western Maryland team of licensed therapists can help improve your range of motion, strength, balance, endurance, and coordination in order to improve mobility, reduce pain and disability. Our team can also treat cardiopulmonary functioning to improve mobility and function.

Occupational Therapy

Sometimes daily activities, such as dressing, personal care, and household chores, may become difficult due to a physical injury or illness. Our UPMC Western Maryland occupational therapy (OT) team helps you get back to doing the things you want and need to every day to return to functioning safely and independently.

Our experienced occupational therapy team includes a NICU therapist, who can help babies and families develop necessary skills for developmental milestones, and a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, who specializes in the treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema with Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). This includes manual lymph drainage, graduated compression garments, decongestive exercises, and meticulous skin care.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a service provided by a licensed and certified health care professional who can help improve your ability to communicate and/or swallow. Our team of licensed speech-language pathologists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. Additional services offered include Modified Barium Swallow studies, Vital stim for Neuromuscular stimulation and Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation for improvement of swallowing abilities.

Ambulation Assistants

Assistants help our patients without mobility restrictions to maintain endurance and functional independence during a hospital stay.

Pet Therapy

Certified therapy dogs and volunteer handlers can improve your well-being.
