WMHS offers a wide range of programs to help patients and their families learn about health-related issues. All classes are provided free of charge, except as noted. Please check the WMHS Calendar for dates and times of current classes. Childbirth Education SeriesThis 3-part series prepare expectant parents for the joys of parenthood. The three components are: Early Pregnancy Class: Provides instruction on how to take care of yourself and your baby throughout your pregnancy. Includes discussion on nutrition, lifestyle, and everything else you need to know to help your baby grow in the healthiest environment possible. Next class - June 2 - Memorial Campus Newborn Care Class: Covers all the basics so you will know how to care for your little one when he or she arrives. Next class - May 14 - Memorial Campus Childbirth Classes: Helps prepare you for the last weeks of your pregnancy, including how to tell when you are in labor, what to expect during labor, breathing techniques, what happens during the actual delivery, and what to expect after you deliver. Offered in a variety of formats: traditional Lamaze classes, basic classes, one-day marathon sessions, and a refresher course for those who have previously attended a class. Child Care ClassesBreastfeeding Class: Everything you need to know about breastfeeding to help you decide how to feed your infant and to be successful with your choice. Next class - July 8 - Memorial Campus Grandparent Class:An informational class for grandparents on obstetrical practices and infant care. Infant and Child CPR Classes: An important class for parents and grandparents. Registration is required through the WMHS Wellness Center at 301-759-9355. A $15 fee covers the cost of the manual from the American Heart Association. Next class - July 26 - Memorial Campus Sibling Class: Helps prepare your other children for the new arrival. Next class - June 11 - Memorial Campus Special Speaker Night: Guest speakers on a variety of topics of interest to expectant parents. Total Joint Replacement Pre-Op ClassesAn informative class for patients facing total hip or total knee surgery. It prepares patients and their families for all aspects of total joint replacement surgery—from admission to discharge, as well as the recuperation period that follows. Also helps patients assess their need for supportive services and home medical equipment following surgery so patients will be ready to return home.
